Not wishing to generalise too much, but having spent time in Europe, it strikes me (and several other people I've discussed it with) that we English are more prone than most to developing a double chin. Even slim people have it (many Europeans have big thighs but no sign of a double chin - not so common with the Brits), and it seems to particularly affect women. Why? Do we spend our lives walking around in a disgruntled, head on chest position? Is it the result of trying to make up for a lack of scarfs during chilly winters? Or is it genetic?

When you develop a muscle then let it atrophy it descends into flab. After a life of stiff upper lip and nose in the air posture, the neck muscles become incredibly strong (and rigid). When middle age arrives the muscle atrophies into an extra layer of fat under the chin. This is exacerbated by a liberal combination of fish and chips, pork pies and suet puddings with custard.

The same process is true of the Americans, but is located at the waist level, through holding in ones gut at the beach in ones younger years while trying to consume the entire inventory of the local McDonald's restaurant. At middle age or after 30, just like Humpty, it falls, never to be put back again.

Well I can't say I've ever noticed itt! lol Have you looked to see if it's the Scottish and Welsh too? Is it just the English? I haven't got one at the moment but I'm 22. Maybe you should do a study? ASk everyone if they have a double chin, their age and where they come from.

Wow, never thought about that, but I would point to our transatlantic cousins on the double chin stakes. As for Brits I think has to do with the drop in Marks & Spencers popularity, where else can you buy such reasonably priced scarves?

I'm guessing it's genetic, though I haven't noticed it myself. Heck I even live in England.. Hmm. It's not something I observe.
