Not anymore. Card. Karol WojtyÅa, who later became pope John Paul II was Polish. He died on 2 April 2005 and Card. Joseph Ratzinger was chosen on 19 April and took name Benedict XVI. He is from Germany, Regensburg if I'm not mistaken. Apart from that I'd like to point out that every pope (aside from those chosen when Vatican had no actual teritory after Itay united and before Lateran Treaty was signed) has citizenship of Vatican and is a head of state recognised also by non catholic and non-christian governments.

not this one! it was very hard to stop saying that too after all those years!!! the new pope is German. do you know why they elected a German pontiff??? they had a lot of kielbasa left over :)
(that is a joke and not meant to offend!!!! I loved Karol Wojtyla/Pope John Paul II and he had an awesome sense of humor so....)
