How often do you play?
Are you competing or just having fun?
Can you afford the cost of new strings?(not cheap)
All of theses things are factors that determine when to change strings.

Jay, basic rule of thumb is to restring as many times in a year as you play in a week. With a MINIMUM of every 6 months. So if you're playing 3 times a week, restring every 4 months. Even if you play only once a week, restring every 6 months at the very least.
Strings have a "life" expectancy. Even if you do not use them, they are losing resiliency and tension. This causes the strings to go "dead." Dead strings can result in control and power loss, as well as arm injury.
Please note, multi-filament strings will tend to go dead more quickly. If you use these types of strings, I'd restring every 3-4 months as a minimum. They are great playing strings, but the effects are more harsh once they go dead.

well it differs from pro to pro for example, roger federer, the number one player, changes his racket at EVERY change over in EVERY match. he claims that this way, he can have his rackest at an even playing style by changing every changeover, he is able to keep even pressure throughout his rackets, insteda of having one thats really beat up and one thats practically new

i broke my strings today! This tell you how weak they are. I got them restringed 2 weeks ago! The best way is to buy a roll of string and just pay for the actual restinging. Check out this website
