paticles were fired at a thin sheet of gold foil. some particles bounced back but most of them went straight through. The rest is pure conjecture!

He placed a sample of alpha-emitting isotope in front of the gold foil and set up to detect alpha particles (He). Some of the alpha particles came back in the same direction. As he put it later, it was like firing a cannon at a sheet of paper and having the shell come rebounding right back at you. He concluded that most of atoms are empty space, and that dense nuclei are the immovable objects that cause particles to recoil.
