why are Germans regarded as so smart?

what are other common stereo types? are they true? what is your general opinion of them ? what traits do you think they have?

It's an interesting question in a way.

The Germans have always been rubbish at visual-art......heavy furniture, poster-style paintings....that sort of thing.

But then consider music.......what a fantastic pedigree. Schutz, Pachelbel, Walther, J S Bach (and all the other Bachs), Mendelssohn, Rheinberger, Wagner, Reger, Beethoven, Brahms, Schoenberg, Hindemith....and that's just the better known composers.

The look at the fantastic musical instruments.....great organ-builders, piano-makers...names such as Bechstein, Steinway, Silbermann, Schnitger....simply the best.

They have had great engineers, designers and scientists....Porsche, DKW, VW/Audi, Foker, Hindenburg....an almost inexhaustible list of great inventors and technologists.

German theology is still the most advanced, and only Martin Luther could overthrow the power of Rome without serious blood-shed.

Traits? Well they can be a bit over-serious and humourless, but the people of the old East Germany are a bit more sociable. As a nation, they seem to have discpline and value education very highly.

If the Germans have a self-destructive streak, it is probably in the way that many things are micro-managed, and that does mean that enterprise and innovation are quite difficult things to achieve.

I don't go for stereotypes at all.....and I'm quite sure there are lots of dumbass Germans too, but overall, they have proved to be an astonishingly clever people.

Musn't forget Michael Schumacher....he's quite good.

If one wants to see the immediate visual diference between a country like France and Germany, then fly from Germany across France.
They don't need to fly a flag or have a big red line painted across the countryside.

You look down, and beautifully neat fields immediately turn into a riotous collection of small-holdings and vineyards.

As a German said to me once, "Zer is only one good thing about ze French. You always know zat you are speaking to a peasant."

I think that was a kind of arrogance, but as he smiled when he said it, I guess it was probably an attempt at humour.

Alot of Germans are probably smart but I've never heared that as being their national stereotype. I hear alot of people say they are bossy and loud. I don't know if it's true because I've only ever met one, called Mr Bieber and he had a breakdown because kids in school locked him in a cupboard. Other ones I hear are Brazilian women are attractive, I think that's true. I'll have to think about it.

This relates back to the second world war.
Remember the "doodle bugs" or flying bomb,there level of technology was far greater than the rest of the world.It was a great shame it was put to evil causes.
More interestingly were the weapons we did not see.(history channel).
Remember it was the Germans that started the American space era with there rocket technology,no days the rest of the world has overtaken Germany who can build products for a cheaper price that will not last as long!

I have never heard that one,stereotypes are never true,you can't group everyone together and assume they are all the same because every person is different. I think people stereo type mostly out of anger of some kind or jealousy.

I like Germans... since I come from Namibia... and you can tell they are smart... just look at the amazing cars they make... urggruggg (Homer Simpson Gurgle)

They like sausage, sauerkraut and beer a lot. Most of the ones I know have foul tempers... and dress really funny.

maybe if you don't think german are smart they'll kill you just kidding seriously never heard that one before I always hear the chinese and japanese are smart, black guys have big weiners, Blondes are sluts and I think it depends on the individual my mom is a blonde and she is not a **** my sister is a blonde and she is lol this guy my b/f hangs out with he's black he always brags about his 6 inch well nobody ever says anything but my boyfriend has him beat big time and he's native american/white like me so I don't believe in stereotypes.their just fun.

I used to follow the generalisations until I got to know a German. They are supposed not to understand our humour, but the bloke I got to know was a match for us anyday!

well they have produced outstanding scientists, ie. Einstein, musicians, ie Beethoven, tennis players, ie Steffie Graf, are very good at soccer, almost conquered the world....ahemm, who was it that asked why??:)
