The the bicarbonate test for carboxylic acids will work for Hippuric Acid. However, the usual test for amides, hydroxyl hydrolysis with heat followed by sniffing for ammonia, will fail in this case as the product amine will also have a carboxylate group (ie, an amino acid). All I can suggest is IR or NMR.
