Believe me, it's weird for us natives as well.

I am American and I agree. Actually I don't think culture would be an accurate description because there is no culture here. Just what the media tells you to buy, wear, believe... if you can call that culture. It's difficult because you want to have a meaningful life but can never live up to the standards that have been set... Always wanting more... and always wondering why more does not make you happy.

I think that American culture, like other cultures in other countries, are stuck between indecisive issues that as a country.. they can't decide. Americans are soooooooo lead by what's popular and what's 'in' that they probably don't even know who they are. I;m American but I refuse to let my society mold me into this brainwashed, weak-minded, 'follower type attitude' that seems to be more acceptable than leadership. I don't speak for every American but that's just my opinion.

Having lived in the UK, Canada and the US, I have to say that there are "weird" elements of each of these cultures and perhaps could extrapolate to say that of every culture. The reason being, because it is different from the culture of the observer.
The primary difference I find in common is between urban and rural residents. Urban residents feel comfortable in their anonymity and weird scurrying around like lemmings. To rural visitors they appear like ants in a colony with no names and no single identity.
On the contrary rural people with their simple manners, waves or nods and knowing everything about their neighbours and doing things like growing vegetables that costs more to produce than to purchase them in the store, appear quaint and somewhat stifling to urban visitors.
It's all in the eye of the beholder.

There are many cultural currents in the US, and if you're referring to the BET and MTV culture that young and shallow people choose to accept as the foundation upon which to mold themselves then it's not weird at all, it's just stupidity. Aside from that there is nothing wrong with American culture, it's vastly superior to the Old World cultures thanks to its willingness to change and adopt new concepts.

It's like Disneyland.
But there are plenty of poor people there, and for them it's anything BUT a dream. It's a nightmare.
A lot of it depends on the people you come into contact with. In the UK, when we describe someone as being "simple" this is a really derogatory term. But many Americans live astonishingly simple, almost cartoon-like lives. And they are happy, so we shoudn't mock them.

our culture is extremely young compared to many other nations. Also, there is such a broad conglomeration of different cultures all mushed up together that it is hard to see any one distinctive culture.

I don't think you have been to America.
Have you been to Africa where soem women are forced to wear larger clay plates in their lips until eventually their lips can be a foot out with a clay plat inside of it?
Have you been to India where people actually believe their ancestors inhabit the bodies of cows? with people starving cows can walk the streets free of harm>
Have you been to the middle east where women must dress in large blacks robes covering their bodies from hear to toe to satisfy
male egos and a rather dismal religion?
have you been to china where in one Provence( 3 yrs ago I think) over 600,000 baby girls were drowned to satisfy the government's ban on children? It still happens country wide there.
Did you not notice that in America all of the people have the right to drive, own cars, vote, dress as they please, eat as they please(and have plenty of food and medicine)?
Did you notice people in America spend more on vacation than most Poe[ple earn in a year?
Did you notice that women in America have all of the freedoms of men and can choose their schools, choice of whom they marry, or dress as they please,?.
Did you notice that you can be of the religion of your choice in America? Try that in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran. Pakistan, Indonesia,
I don't know where yuo are from but evidently you haven't been toamerica or you would be asking how to stay here unless you are some sicko
