Although it can have many different causes, resistance to change CAN stem from selfishness, despite many of these other answers. I would not endeavor to say that it is a leading or primary cause, but many people, including myself, fall under the category of controlling personalities. I want things my way, partly because I am arrogant/confident that my way is best, and partly because I am more comfortable that way.
When change occurs in my life, I do my best to make it my own/internalize it. If I feel in control, or as if I at least had some say in the change, it is easier for me to adapt. When this is not possible, I do my best to grin and bare it. This may constitute selfishness on my part, but I believe it is healthy for me. Different personality types have varying ways of dealing with change, right or wrong.

I suppose it can BUT being resistant to changes is not a bad thing in all cases. I mean my son may think I am selfish for not wanting my eyebrow pierced and being more modern but that does not mean I am going to do this right?

If you are going to accept change then do it to please yourself but then again do not go through life with a narrow mind and miss all the fun of it or settle for ignorance because you cannot except new facts.

No...Taking some people away from their comfort zone can be detrimental.

edit* Sometimes the resistance is to ensure self preservation. If someone takes away the water, sun, or up roots a plant, does it not die? The same could be said for people. Some do have it right the first time, so why not keep it in tact? And some prefer change to occur naturally.

For me it certainly does. Selfishness and also a fear of not being able to handle the changes that come. I've said in the past that I don't fear anything, but there are times when I just don't think I can handle any more change. I know that God will get me through it, but sometimes I forget that.

Not exactly. Sometimes people resist changes that coud be better for them personally. I would say it stems from egotism. Too egotistical to admit oneself might be wrong.

No, it's a personal safety device. To most people change is scary - even good change.

I believe fear has more to do with it than selfishness. Not many truly welcome change because the unknown is not comforting.
