I am about 80% sure I'm pregnant, but it's too soon to take a test (my period is still over a week away). I am due for a pap smear appointment tomorrow, but now I don't know if I should go at this stage. Should I wait until I can get a reliable test result? I had thought an OBGYN could sort of talk me through this and offer some counseling and wisdom, but now I'm afraid they'll insist on a pap regardless. I have abnormal cervical cells that have required a pap every 3 mos. for the past year+, so if I'm not pregnant, something else is wrong down there, and I feel I should see a doctor. But I'm scared! Can anyone offer any thoughts, such as at what point during a pregnancy a pap is safe/recommended?

Go get the PAP as usual. It's perfectly safe. My doc does the full annual check up including PAP on pregnant patients at 8 weeks if they have not had one in the last 6 months. I had one then with my first pregnancy. It was fine and my girl is a year old now.

Definitely tell them you think you might be pregnant and ask any questions you still have.

It is safe to get a pap while you are pregnant (if you are), I have been pregnant 4 times (one miscarried) and with all of them (except misscarriage) I had at least 2 paps for testing purposes and they are all just fine! There really is nothing to fear and if you have some sort of problem with your cells that it is required for you to test, I would not play around and just do the pap, because if you are not pregnant and there is a far worse problem, it is better to get it checked out NOW!! Good luck!

I would call & ask you provider! I had a pap done at 13 weeks gestation, because I had never had one ever, they wanted to make sure that they was nothing that could weaken my cervix durring the pregnancy! I was fine!

* My friend had a pap done way before she was even thing about kids...It came back abnormal, so they did a biopsy of her cervix(took a small piece) Everything ended up fine. She got pregnant like 2 years later, & miscarried at 28 weeks because the biopsy weaked her cervix!!! I do NOT want to scare you but, you should probably just ask! I think that they will have no problem doing one!!!

You should go to your appointment. They will be able to tell you for sure if your pregnant or not and usually getting the pap will not be a problem. Just tell them you think you might be pregnant. Your doctor should answer any questions that you have. It is best to go see your doctor just to clear your mind of all that is worrying you. If they don't think it is safe to give you a pap they won't do it.

At your first ob appt. when you are preggers they will do a pap smear. It does nothing to baby and is given to everyone who is preggers to see what is going on down there. I have had abnormal cells for two years now and had a leep procedure. The pap I had when I was 9 weeks preggers indicated they are still there...but they will not touch them until after this little guy is born. Pap smears are competely safe to have while pregnant!!!

I'm 4 weeks pregnant. I got a pap today because I have abnormal cells due to HPV. My Dr. says its safe to just do the pap only.

Just let your dr know that you think you are pregnant before the PAP. Everything should be fine. I had a PAP when I was about 7 wks prego, most dr's now do one routinely to check for any STD's
