No. Divorce is the beginning of the end of marriage.

The NYTimes story uses data from the 2005 American Community Survey. It includes all females 15 and older.

The ACS survey results for %married by age are:
15 and older - 51%
15-19 years - 2.5%
20-34 years - 44.2%
35-44 years - 65.5%
45-54 years - 65.4%
55-64 years - 63.3% (9.6% more are widowed)
65 and older - 42.8 % (42.6% more are widowed)

Looks to me like marriage is alive and well. I think the data indicates females are delaying marriage until their mid 30's not avoiding marriage entirely. But that story would not have garnered the same level of attention.

Also - the NYtimes article subtracted a figure 'married but spouse absent (but not separated)' in order to reduce the overall 51% to 49%. I dont see it in this ACS report.

Marriage is highly overrated! I can't wait unitl my divorce is final. I will never marry again! I'm not saying I wont be in a committed relationship ever again...just that you don't need to be married to do that. You don't need marriage to find your soulmate either. Society is wising up and I do feel that the rate of marriage will continue to decline...

Hopefully. Sooner or later people need to wise up and figure out that marriage is just an institution and not a realistic way to live your life.

I certainly hope not. I think marriage is a good thing. Although I am married and have not lived with my husband for a year and a half!!!! It does seem way easier to be single than to not live with someone.

reason being is because society on the prompt can opt for women folk even extra then men. women folk have become extra self sustaining. women folk do no longer opt for a guy to do issues for them like in the twentieth century. many women folk are literally not attracted to men and performance no choose for sex or any interactions with men. the in reality reason it truly is at fifty one% is because we men help them reproduce. If it wasn't for that reality, that statistic might want to start to 80 5% or maybe larger.

Those 51% have not yet found their soulmate. Some people just never do.
