Have you ever pretended to be something your not to impress someone or to boost your own ego (like said you were a doctor etc........) Why did you and did it work?

Thanks to everyone who answered so far...........yes I do know that everyone on Y pretty much pretends to be someone else but I am looking for specific situations in person.
The reason I ask is because I currently hold a counselling certificate but my daughter (and I have no idea why) told her teacher that I am a psychiatrist. Well I found out because her teacher and I were talking and next think I knew she was asking me for advice on something and she made the comment that I can just "bill" her for my time, jokingly. After I mentioned it to my daughter she told me it must be because she told her I was a psychiatrist. I feel stupid now but at the same time, I haven't cleared it up with the teacher. My certificate in counselling is far from a degree in psychiatry.

well, this may not answer your question exactly.
BUt sometimes I pretend to be some one who is happy, have no problems no debts, like a person who has everything it needs. _when I have so much abuse at home, and so much debts no job and not even a possible job, and may end up in the street tomorrow.

I do it once in a while to see whether people would just believe me, to see if i am good like that to lie about something sticking to the story that noone whould even catch me lying. I do it for a personal development.....if one day i have to take poli for any reason I believe that kind of training help you out to stick to your lie so good that it almost become like an everyday truth to you. You actually start believing your lies. I dont know if it makes sence and hopefully i never have to use that to protect myself in that way. I just think it would be a good execise for someone who is trying to be a special agent or CIA, or FBI and wherever you may apply those skills....Ohh by the way a lawyer could use some of that skill too....;)

Ever since I was a kid I used to make up stuff about my past or who I was just to see if people would believe me. It was never for an ego boost, and I never lied to try to get something from someone...I usually reveal the truth later on.

THIS IS BEST BE DESCRIBED AS IMPERSONATION...

As a matter of fact, and for the fun of it, I could think of Two:

Sales People...

Actors & Actresses....

I happen to have done it once in mylife...

Circumstances got me into contact with a person who lived abroad more than he lived in his mother land...

He had Two Phd's & One Masters Degree in Electronics & Communication.

I presented him to a Number of Clients of mine whom I used to follow upon through the Co. I used to work for before...

I presented him as though I was his Works Manager...

THIS WAS NOT TRUE OF COURSE...

I done it for Three Reasons primarily...

1. To better handle people who seemed like taking advantage of him...

2. I felt he was not really good when it comes to negotiations...

3. I was trying to secure myself with a tangible reward out of this that whole process...

It actually worked eventually and he was secured with a Position in oneof those Co.'s due to the smart approach made...

I didn't get anything out of it, though, and I DO NOT REGRET IT..

Sometimes, I pretend to be aloof or distracted, when I am feeling shy. Also, I really like most people and show it- but if I think someone is arrogant or a little too proud of themselves, or throwing their weight around, I pretend to be reserved and detached as if they don't exist.

I do it alot just to poke fun about how people trust you. So i guess it would be to boost my own ego knowing i could trick people. And yes it works all the time haha. I only do it for fun though never to gain anything but fun. I am trying to go to medical school though so i wont have to lie about the doctor thing woohoo

My friend did and she learned the hard way. There was this guy she really liked and he was only into models and stuff like that (not professional) but you know how they have modeling for students and stuff? And she told him she was so they talked for a while and one day we went to some fashion show and he was in it and he saw her sitting in the audience and afterwards he was so mad because he was like your name isn't in the program so why would you lie and she felt stupid. I told her don't do it but noooo she had to learn the hard way now they don't even talk he won't even look her way

LOL! This a good question. I got a US Airways Visa in the mail a few months ago and for some reason they have me as Doctor. My card actually says Dr. in front of my name. I've never called to have it corrected. It's funny. And really nice to be in line and they say thank you dr.________
Plus it's a lot cheaper then medical school........
