I have 1988 toyota 4runner with 22re engine. idle surges when warm, mpg decreased significantly (16 mpg/hwy), engine light on. Trouble codes show 'throttle position sensor-open/short' & 'knock sensor signal-open/short' & 'EGR system malfunc.-EGR gas temp below spec.'

I don't even know where to begin with these. I'd rather not put it in a shop and shell out the dough if I can do it myself. Any ideas??

Check for vacuum leaks, in the past I have used a can of wd40 and spray it around the intake manifold any where there would be a gasket leak, the engine will rev up if there is a leak. If it only does it when it's warm it may be a line that's controlled by a temp activated vacuum switch, listen for leaks but don't spray anything flammable on a hot surface.
If you can't find any leaks then get a good service manual and a multi tester, a good manual will lead you step by step on testing certain sensors like the throttle position ect...

Considering the age of the Toyota I would not even check or try to repair the EGR. REPLACE it.!!The TPS and KNOCK sensor come next...Do the egr and take it from there...Clear the codes after the EGR and see what you end up with...

TPS = easy
EGR = kind of hard to get to.
Knock sensor = realy hard to get to.

Go buy a Chiltons, or Haynes manual. $25
