I am going to buy a laptop this week. I do not currently have a computer at my home at all. I will be using it to pay bills and keep up with money, burn cds and dvds, store my pics from my digital camara, put stuff on my ipod, surf the internet, email, talk to my best friend in japan, and I need a good bit of memory so I can finish writing my book. I would like it to be wireless and high speed. What brands are the best? the worst?

Stay clear of HP/Compaq and Gateway. I prefer Dell, although I hear critics of their customer support I have always had nothing but great customer support from Dell and I manage the IT department and we buy nothing but Dell. All of them are available with the wireless card you need. Some of the lower end machines may not be available with big enough hard drives for you. Make sure you get at least a 100GB hard drive. If it will still be another couple of weeks before you order your laptop, you will probably be forced to get Vista instead of XP. With Vista you will want to get a minimum of 1GB RAM. If you are doing a lot with downloading and playing music, movies, etc. I would suggest getting 2GB RAM. The book you are writing won't take nearly the storage space your music and photos will, since it is only text.

The other way you can go is The MacBook is a really good machine and will handle all the things you need it to do.

You might try exploring PC World's lists. Basically you need to narrow it down as far as features before you decide on what brand is best. As far as reliability, you can check out PC Magazines survey.

DELL is by far the best product for the quality that it is. So far I have helped 4 people pick out one and customize it to suite there needs as well as the price range that they like. www.dell.com

I'd go with Gateway. You might think you're paying more but really you get what you pay for.
