A nucleotide.

It is most definitely not an amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, not nucleic acid.

The BASIC molecular unit (if thats what you define as a "chemical unit") would be an amino-acid. A nucleotide is a protein and so, by extrapolation, is a nucleic acid! Just bigger!
