If you are comfortable with the command line go to..

Start->Run and type in cmd

type in the command

cd Desktop

and then delete what you do not want as follows

del "The file name to delete"

ONCE IT IS DELETED FROM HERE THERE IS NO RESTORING IT SO BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!!

In my 20 years experience, the only way to remove desktop icons is to either drag them to the recycle bin, or right click and choose Delete. It will ask if you want to remove the shortcut. You click Yes, and the icon goes to the recycle bin. The other way is to uninstall the program for the shortcut. The icon is just a shortcut to that program, so if drag and drop or delete doesn't work, you will have to go into Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall the program for that shortcut.
