Paul McCartney was always close to John Lennon's son, Julian. He used to come over just to see him and hang out with him. He wrote this song on the way to see Julian one day after John had divorced Julian's mother, Cynthia. It was originally sung "Hey Jules" (which is short for Julian), but Paul ended up changing it to "Hey Jude" instead because he thought it worked better.
FYI - John Lennon always felt that the song was partly for him too, though Paul never owned up to that part. :-)
