When my old desktop finally got *too* old and was giving up the ghost in many ways, I *did* upgrade with a sledge hammer. We felt the need to destroy the hard drive to avoid any possibility of loss of personally identifiable information or passwords or credit card info or identity theft or that kind of stuff. So I played Captain Destructo with the hard drive and thoroughly enjoyed it. I took the hard drive to the garage, with a sledge, and pliers, and hit it several directions on the vise, and broke it to pieces, then the same with the motherboard just for the heck of it, and we disposed of them in several different locations.
