You have to understand, "Saturday Night Live" was put on the map by Chevy Chase. He was the first break-out star of the show, the creator and first anchor for "Weekend Update" and one of the reasons this late-night comedy show with the horrific timeslot of Saturday night ever got any recognition. Even if Chevy never did another thing worth mentioning, he would still deserve props for that!
But he has done many, many classic comedies. "Fletch," "Caddyshack," "Three Amigos," "National Lampoons Vacation," "Christmas Vacation," "Spies Like Us"... sure there were a couple of really rotten tomatoes under his belt too, but it's not like Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd or any other SNL alumni never did a stinker film.
I think people are downright mean to Chevy... case in point the Friar's Club Roast aired on Comedy Central, where no-name, talentless loser comics picked him apart and spent a good amount of time making fun of his past battles with drugs and alcohol. Chevy is legendary... we should all remember that.
"The Zen philospher Bashee once said, 'A flute without a hole is no flute... and a doughnut without a hole is a danish. He was a funny guy!"

Fletch is one of my favourite films. Foul Play, Caddyshack and Memoirs of An Invisible Man were good too.

Best bit in National Lampoons Christmas vacation when him and the family are all running upstairs to escape the squirrel and the squirrel is sat on his back ... and he doesn't know it ! I laugh every time. SometimesI just look at him and his confused look and laugh. Great..I love him.

There is something about him. A sort of innocence even when he's being rude.
