Doing some research for my mother in law. She wants to know if these lights need to shine directly on a person? Do they come in three way bulbs? and how many are needed for an average 9x12 room. I have tried to poke around but I am finding sales not facts. Thanks.

Stay away from them. They will harm you. Use all spectrum lights instead. They are good for indoor plants.

They should shine in direction of person if for health reasons, but does not have to be in the face, etc.

I used a fluorescent bulb in a fixture (around 18"). This fixture I chose can hang on a ceiling, wall, under cabinet or wherever. But the greatest about it, it is enclosed on the back, so I actually carry it around or lay close by me for doing reading, needlework, etc. (I still have regular bulbs, elsewhere in the room.) Also know this makes eye sight so much easier, especially in the evening. I can even carry it around when I go elsewhere or travel.

Purchased at Home Depot (Lowe's should have also)
