A dude in Virginia was advertising stuff about abortions in New York. Virginia law said that advertising or encouraging abortions was illegal. So they took the dude to court, and he was convicted.
However, the US Supreme Court overturned the conviction saying that since the information was about stuff going on in New York (were it was legal to advertise), Virginia had no right to infringe on his free speech rights, weighing the amount of constitutional interest in free speech and the public interest in the Virginia law.
Make sense? Hope this helps.

The regulation of commercial speech.
1975: Bigelow vs. Virginia: Commercial speech is protected for the first time when a state ban on ads for abortion referrals is overturned. Commercial speech “is not valueless in the marketplace of ideas,” says the court.

It was a First Amendment (freedom of speech) issue, brought about by newspaper advertising related to abortion services. That's the short version. If you want to read the details here is the site

Deuce Bigelow was very upset because one of his "janes," named Virginia, did not pay him for his services.
