That is a very shallow question to ask.

The best laptop for you all depends on what applications you plan to use on it and is it going to be sitting on a desk or used for traveling.

For brands of laptops, I really reccomend to use a Company who has their tech support in the U.S. and not overseas. This is only becasue wheen you really need help, having a language issue just makes you calls mush more frustrating. You can find out which Companies have their support in the U.S. by going on Consumer Reports site.

Next, what applications are you planning to use on this laptop?

If you are using the laptop for any high end applications like CAD or Desktop Publishing, you will need more RAM and hard drive space than just using it for MS Office applications. Do not let the sales people sucker you in to pruchase the fastest CPU and largest hard drive in the bunch.
At a minimum, I would recommend a AMD CPU over an Intel CPU since they are much cheaper and in some test faster and a speed of 3ghz on the high side and 2.5ghz on the low side which will save you money on the laptop.
For memory, I recommend using 2 gigs of RAM instead of one since this will greatly speed up opening multiple applications and help with any future applications which will usually need more RAM.
For the hard drive, I recommend atleast 80-100 gig. The average Operating System (Windows XP Pro) by itself will take up almost 1 gig of space and the complete MS Office suite is another 2-3 gig of space with all of the options installed. Every application takes up a different amount of hard drive space, when you add in MP3's and Images you are looking at gigs of space depending on how many MP3's and Images you have now or plan to have in the future.
You always need to look at future use and not just now, Laptops are 2-3 times as much to upgrade memory and hard drives compared to a desktop computer.
Next is the display size, if you plan to travel with the laptop stay with a 15" display but if you are using the laptop as a desktop replacement and you do not plan to travel with it then go for the 17" display. Remember, even if you purchase the 15" display you can always buy a 17" LCD display to hook onto the laptop later on for home for around $200 - $250.

Now another big question you will be asked by the sales person.
Do you want to purchase an extended warranty? This will depend on if you travel with the laprop or leave it at home. Laptops are still on the fragile side, especially the even more so for the 17" display. One more thing to remember about the extended warrany and even the standard warranty is do they cover the LCD from ANY damages or only things that are not an accident like a manufacturer defect. LCD displays them selves are atleast 50% to 70% the cost of the laptop itself so if the manufacturer canget out of paying to replace it they will. You need to verify that the extended warranty will replace the LCD display if an accident not only a manufacturer defect. You should also contact the Manufacturer befoer you buy the laptop to see if they offer an extended warranty or accidentental warranty whcih will cover the LCD display and how much those cost instead of from the stor you purchased the laptop from, sales people and the store make money by selling you the exteded warranty which means they are looking out for themselves not you.

I bought HP d5000 ($1500) and it's been purdy good, 2nd best to Toshiba in Consumer Reports. However (and mebbe I wish I'd known it at the time) PC magazine for *durability* rates IBM (Lenovo) about 100 times any of the others, and at about the same price range and power! My other laptop is an IBM and sure enough it's a "workhorse" and has lasted, through many bumps, for quite awhile.
