This is a really good question. When electrical things are turned on and off there is a greater risk of damage so expensive things that don't use much power should be left on while you are there to monitor them for fire or power failure. A laptop battery should be allowed to discharge, but it also acts as a battery backup in case of a power failure.

In practice, if you spend enough time with electronic devices, you notice that they usually fail when you first turn them on. A microcomputer seldom fails while you are using it: it is far more likely that you will turn it on some day and it will simply fail to boot properly. This is because the stress caused by the power-on current surge is much greater than the stress caused by leaving the system on for long periods. For this reason, the usual recommendation is to leave the computer on unless you won't be using it for a long time, or there is some specific source of voltage surges that you need to avoid exposing the system to.

The definition of "a long time" is where it becomes difficult to nail down a firm rule. In the days when computers were large and everyone had terminals on their desks, manufacturers recommended that a terminal that was going to be used all day should be left on overnight (with a blank screen). Since in my experience computers still usually fail when they are turned on, I still generally follow that advice: if I'm going to be using a computer regularly throughout the day, every day, I usually leave it on at night, BUT that is only if I think there is little risk of a nearby lightning strike causing damage, or a sudden power failure causing loss of files. What this means in practice is that if the system is on a good UPS then I leave it on at night. If not, I turn it off at night since there are a lot of electrical storms where I live. I generally leave my system on during the day if I expect to be using it again later in the day.

YES it is. I had a laptop and I used to do the same thing, but I never used it much so for maybe 4 months it sat there plugged into the ac power with the battery in it. So I end up selling the laptop to my friend and he tells me : IS the battery damaged?
I ask him why? he tells me cause it only keeps a charge for 10minutes. Ouch. I guess it ruined the battery. So don't do it.
Unplug it or remove the battery while on AC.

The only harm is that is might wear out the battery sooner.

I keep mine plugged in all the time and find that within a year my battery can no longer hold a charge. I was told by a technician that it might be a good idea to take out the battery if you have it plugged in for a long time.

No, once the battery has been charged, the laptop will run purely on ac power. Most laptop (and cell phone) batteries have a chip in them that prevent from over charging.

It is not harmful to the computer but it is harmful to the battery for if it over charges to much it will discharge and not charge right in the end.

It really depends on the type of battery you have. The newer batteries are LI-IO, and won't be harmed by being continuously plugged in.

The two older types, NI-CD and Ni-MH batteries, will be affected by something called "memory effect".
