how do you keep sponge filters to stay on the bottom of the aquarium?

Use suction cups to hold it in place.

Some weights, some use suction cups.

we have made our own in the past and weighed it down with gravle from the tank so as to not introduce new toxins to the tank. what ever you do do not use anything copper as it is toxic to fish
