There are several areas that you could explore as having improved.
1. Information technology. Computers have made communication so much easier and faster than even at the start of the 80s. They are much faster reliable and powerful than ever. The Internet is now widely available. At the end of the 80s only a select few had any access to it.
2. Medicine. The advances in medical treatments and cures is close to overwhelming. Heart transplants are common, artificial limbs, pumps to help diabetes maintain their sugar levels. The number of pills has also increased.
3. Civil rights. More diverse people in the U. S. have gained access to work and school opportunities.
4. There is no cold war. We all were scared that the U. S. and Soviet Union were going to start nuking each other back then.

I hope that gets you started. The world has changed rapidly. Take your pick.

Try to find out what has progressed over the last 20 -40 years, e.g. is housing more accessible, the purchase of council housing has occurred in this period; more people have cars now, why, better careers/salaries or are cars more accessible; the minimum wage has given some people a better existence; access to education for all and the promotion of life long learning has opened up opportunities for more people; other developments in education - is the National Curriculum a good thing?; holidays are more accessible giving people more choice, change and leisure; more emphasis on healthy eating etc; find out new laws in this period e.g The Children Act 1989 has brought child abuse and protecting children into the arena much more and generally there is much more openness about abuse and therefore more convictions?, UN Convention on Human Rights, there must be more; racism is tackled much more, bullying is tackled now (not saying this is effective): has transport improved (bearing in mind this time period has lost Concorde). Hope these ideas help stimulate some thought. Good luck.

I think I would go from the angle that every generation believes they have improved on what came before. Its something in our nature to try to out-do our parents, to earn more, invent more, created bigger or smaller anything that is better. So, from that perspective you can argue that our perception is that we have made the world a better place. You could use examples like the technology that has been developed, our awareness of what previous generations have done to the planet and the economic stability in this country.

Good luck!

I would oppose it but that's just me. The world is just getting more and more messed up. Of course if you don't want to oppose it, you could say that we . . . lol, everything I think of can be countered by something else, such as technology. It's helped us, but it's also brought more bad things into this world. Such as us relying on it too much and the internet and sexual predators.
