the pen is mightier then the sword because you can kill someone once, but you can destroy them for all eternity and to a wider audience in print. Chaucer from a knights tale told the guys on the road that stripped and robbed him that they would be vilified for all time in print.

Yes pen is mightier than sword in that things that pen can do a sword can not.A sword can evoke detest but a pen can herald a revolution. You might be able to hurt a few with swords to champion your cause but with your writing you can inspire people and and also make the, happy. As far as the saying actions are louder is concerned, it refers only to the fact that when you do and accomplish something it is more pronounced rather than just being said.I can say a thousand things but when i accomplish them do i prove my worth.

What if the action is 'writing' and the 'sword' is the words? Then the act of writing is more powerful than the words written. The words would have no meaning if they were not written (or taken action with).

I don't necessarily believe that actions are stronger than words but I do think that a persons actions speak louder than their words. It is easy for a person to say something but harder for them to follow through with the action.

Because the sword will kill, and once your dead your dead. the pen on the other hand can torture you and continue to kill your soul very slowly everyday for the rest of your life until you pray for the "Sword" aka Death.

Both of these idioms carry totally distinct meanings and are not contrary notions as you seem to imply.

An example of the "actions" idiom : someone who professes to do something, or want to achieve something, but does little to do or achieve.

An example of the latter idiom:
Someone is brought down by the printed revelation of some unsavory aspect of their personal life.....Nothing physical brought him or her down...

because even though someone may die, the actions(actions again!) they did when they were alive live on. did Abraham Lincoln's death destroy his legacy? nope, not at all. but if the history books were written with lies about Abe, then people today would not have the same opinion of him at all either.
