I am 15 and thinking about a career in the police. I am quite skinny but I am physikly fit and do running at school. Is this a good job to do?

Does anyone on here have a career in police?

I was wanting to be a police dog handler after 2years but I realised that that job is really hard to get.

you shoudl do whatever it is your dreams are... I also am getting prepared at home for entering into the world of the police force. Ignore these jackasses that say bad things about them, sure there are a lot of bad cops out there, but the good outweighs them. People arnt understanding they need the youth to start joining, we are the new people, who hopeflkly will create the new fair laws... the old cowboy asshole type cops are retiring as we speak. Im all for you...it doesnt matter if you are skinny, im skinny, im a girl, im blonde, and i still can kick ***, that isnt my concern, join for all the right reason, be a part of the force to create a better world, not just pull over a bunch of punks, some of these people need to get their head out of their ***. Police are NOT bad people, and the i smell baon and blah blah blah **** needs to fade out, that was then. this is now becoming a new genertaion of law enforcement. Be a part of it. Good luck. And yes, it takes a good cop, and a lot of time and years to have them be willing to put you with a dog. But good luck, again.

I think it would be a fantastic job to do. No two days are the same. If you like helping people then go for it. As long as you are phsically fit you should be fine. Some Police forces have recruitment days which are fantastic, you get to meet officers or varying ranks etc and of different divisions, like the dog handlers. If you really want to do it go for it. I'd like to join the Police as a Special but I just don't have the time to commit at the moment.

Ive been in federal law enforcement for past seven years. The fact that you are quite skinny is not really an issue right now because you still have time to, and probably will build up as you get older. LE is a job that is not for everyone, but if it is something you really want to do, then go for it. In regards to wanting to be a dog handler, I dont know as to how hard it is to get in local law enforcement, but in military police it is extremely easy to get. I know right now there is a dire need for dog handlers in the Air Force. However if you were to go that route, I would DEFINATELY suggest going Guard. Ive worked LE all seven years I have been in and its fun. Plus civilian agencies like the experience most often you recieve with military training. Just some thoughts.

Well, I am not a police officer....'cos I'm not brave enough! I think the police have a very difficult job to do and thank goodness we have them!

You would need to be patient, be able to take orders, understand the kind of problems out there on the streets and not have a criminal record yourself or associate with criminals.

You need to be calm in a crisis but also be prepared for some of the rough and tumble that occurs.

There is a lot more paperwork than there ever used to be and this can be frustrating as it keeps you from doing the job you trained for!

If it still appeals to you, perhaps you could do a little work experience with them now to get a taste for the job.

Whatever you do, best wishes.

This site has job descriptions for about every job there is. http://stats.bls.gov/ Spend some time on it.

Why not call some police departments up and ask about career days? Do any of the police departments in your area have programs for young men that want to be police? (Kind of like cadet boy scout type things?)

If I were you I would make an effort to talk to some policemen about their jobs. They are generally helpful people. Let them know about your carreer goals and ask them how they would procede if they were your age.

I'm a SWAT medic. I'm a woman. I'm physically fit and do fine. My department has some very small men 5'4 skinny, they do fine. Its all about command presence. Physical ability does play a huge roll but so does your ability to project that you can handle yourself and that person would be better off not pushing your buttons. Besides your 15 and still have some growing to do. You'll be fine. It depends on your department of choice on how hard it would be to get a dog handler but yes generally its hard to come by and takes longer than 2yrs to get the position. Good luck and don't fret.

Go for it!! I know police have a bad rep. but the pensions not bad or the pay. Its true about the dogs though. You have to work for 2 years before you can even apply and even then loads of people apply for it as i would of thought it would be a really great job. But never give up!!! Theres always a chance so goodluck!!!! :)

my dad was a police officer for oer 30 years and still works for his local constabulary in a civilian role...e has done just about every job the police have (with the exceptions of firearms, horses and dogs)...it is hard work and i know i went through a period of bullying at school due to his job...each constabulary is different...he was turned down or one force as they claimed he was half an inch too short and accepted by the next...the police also have many openings for 'civilians'...it is a long process...think it over and good luck...x

This is an excellent career. I'm not a cop but hubby an BIL are in law enforcement.

Do your research now. Figure out where you want to work and what their requirements are. Look at their websites etc.

Good luck--it is an admiral career.

Not a copper, but it is a good job i would imagin. Not doing the same thing day in day out, get to speed round in a car thats not your own. And if you are in the UK its the best pension scheme you can have.
Give it a lot of thought before jumping in, the police are not exactly the most popular people.
