Most of it has to do with the old NFL and American Football League (AFL) now known as the AFC. They were two completely different leagues at one time. They then created the Super Bowl to decide a true champion and later merged to form one league with the two conferences. Since then teams have been added or switched to create balance and regional divisions and rivalries.
