a meteorite would not cause much damage at all, unless it hits you in the head, or if it hits a house or a car.

an asteroid could destroy the whole planet or just a couple miles of vegitation, or hit the water and if its small just evaporate a few thousand gallons of water.

if it is large, and hits the water and cause tidal waves and wipe out costal cities as far inland as 200 miles.

the severity of a large impact would be that an astroid roughly 8-10 miles long could hit the earth and make a crater roughly 100-125 miles wide and could throw millions or even billions of tons of ash and debris into the atmosphere causing the clouds to become dark and filled with dirt then blocking out the suns light for a few years or even a few hundred years thus causing most of the oceans to have a thin layer of ice over it which could kill millions of fish that could not adapt fast enough. Land animals would not be able to adapt fast enough and millions of animals would die leaving smaller mammals such as rats to clean up the mess, humans would be the only ones that could adapt quick enough but millions would still die within a 500-1000 mile radius. This would mean another ice age.
A large metoer roughly 100-250 miles across would mean global deaths and the only things that would survive would be micro-organisms and deep sea life forms. these miro organisms would be left to repopulate the earth.
A meteor the size of pluto would break the earth into peices and everything would die.

It can be very severe indeed, resulting the annihilation of this planet.
Even if it is not that disastrous, impact of a large meteorite may be considerably significant. A meteorite impact has created the Bosumtwi lake in Ghana (10 km diameter), and another in Lonar, Maharashtra, India (1.8 km diameter and 170 m deep - the estimated meteorite was 60 m long and weigh about 0.2 million tons). You can very well imagine the impact of such large mass.

it depends on where it lands. if it lands in the ocean it would cause massive tidal waves that would wipe out all coastal areas and maybe even beyond. if it hits land it would cause earthquakes and send up ash from the ground that would circulate across the atmosphere, possibly blocking out light for a few years. this could cause a new ice age.
