After you do delete one of the Windows XP, make sure you install a anti-virus program, so that you don't end up having the same thing happen again. Even if you delete the program with the virus in it, the virus is still in your computer and will continue to affect other programs and the computer.

Usually if you install a program that is the same, the computer will prompt you to overwrite the existing program. Do you actually have to choose a Windows XP upon starting the computer? If not, get a good antivirus program and your problem will be solved.

Do you want to completely remove the one of the windows xp installation or its just the two options that is irritating you?
Well to completely remove one of the xp installation you will have to do a clean format / reinstall of XP which i believe you do not want to do as you will lose your data, otherwise you would 've done the clean installation in the first place itself.

To remove the option of two operating system when it boots you can either edit that "boot.ini" file or you can change the value for display time for both the operating system. You can change the display time from the "boot.ini" also. If you are unsure and not comfortable editing the boot.ini file you can change the timeout option from system properties window.

To go to system properties window, click on start go to control panel and see on the top left corner if you have an option to change to classic view. Click on that. Click on system. Now you get a system properties window. Click on Advanced tab and then under the startup and recovery system click on settings. You get an option over there to choose which windows installation would you like to get displayed first. Now when you boot your system and you choose the first option, then you can leave the selected option like that and simply reduce the timeout limit.

If you completely want to remove the second operating system option you will have to edit your "boot.ini" file. You can open the boot.ini file from that system properties to edit. Right below where you have the timeout option for the operating system you have a edit button to edit the boot.ini file. Click on that and it will open a notepad window which will look like this below.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

You need to delete one of the entry for windows depending upon which one you are booting into.

***Make sure you remove the right one.***

Best of Luck.

put the disk in and follow the steps for installing, when it asks about the partitions, fix your partition to just 1 partition and then reinstall windows. Now you will have only one copy of windows installed.
