unfortunately, probably not. But we are closer to that than a woman president I think.

I think this also begs the question: "Is America mature enough for a WOMAN president?" ..Probably not. But if the time comes, they'll just have to deal with it. It's about time we've had a president who isn't just your typical white male.

It's time to show that we Americans can accept if our future President will be black/African American.

It'll show how America has changed and this country has become a truly free country.

What does the color of a person's skin have to do with their ability to be president?

Forget gender. Forget ethnicity. Anyone who has a proven track record and the ability to get the job done should be considered for the job by the American people.

Unfortunately, no, I don't think we are. There are too many prejudices against minorities and women in the political arena. Take a look at how people feel about Hillary Clinton - many people hate her simply because she is a woman. They have absolutely no other reason, and in fact, embrace men who behave exactly as she does, simply because they have a body part she does not.

I am not black, but I know my country and I know that there are too many ignorant rednecks in this country who would sooner die than have a black President. It will happen, but I doubt it will happen in my lifetime.

After the way the left and their biased media treated Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice, and other prominent black conservatives, I'd say no.

What was especially heinous was their depictions of these people using derogatory black stereotype images, and the fact that no blacks or liberals raised objections to such depictions. That's what I call lack of moral courage to oppose the liberal herd mentality.

I forgot when liberals pelted Lt Gov (MD) Michael Steele with Oreo cookies (white on the inside, black on the outside) and other nasty stuff.

Why should anybody believe that liberals are not racist?

its not a matter of maturity. like any person, its about finding a person qualified enough for the job, and if that happens to be a black person, more power to him/her. although i do not believe that Obama (who i assume you are referring to at this point) is a good choice, that does not mean that a black president is out of the question. like someone already said, we need to be able to find one who is not going to go on a power trip for minorities and call them victims and lose focus on the real issues that are going on right now.

and for Sara2007: your reference to "ignorant rednecks" is extremely ignorant in and of itself. what you said has no factual or logical basis. your answer is in fact the ignorant one. and as for Hilary Clinton, it may be because she is extreme in her views, too far to the left for many people to approve of her. Maybe if we found a more qualified woman instead of an extreme feminist who has no logical solutions for anything but certainly is not afraid to open her mouth and say something ignorant then we will have a woman president.

I don't think it really matters. People are concerned about things like economy and war in Iraq, so race would be only a minor issue for those people who are small-minded enough to care.

Note that only in US would someone like Obama or Mariah Carey be considered "black". They are mixed race, like a lot of people.

Better question: Are certain Americans mature enough to see beyond gender, race, and class?
