Arthur Golden based Memoirs of a Geisha on Mineko Iwasaki, a real geisha. He spoke with her, promised not to mention her name, and when his book was published, her name was mentioned in the back. Mineko wrote her own book, Geisha a Life. It's freaky how similar the books are, except that Memoirs of a Geisha is sexualized. But Arthur Golden didn't stop there. He mentioned Mineko Iwasaki in interviews. He said she sold her virginity for a record price. But she didn't, neither did any other real geisha. If you want to hear the truth, if you want to learn about geisha, go read Mineko Iwasaki's Geisha a Life. But if you want a fairy tale that hurts real people, a novel that makes artist out to be prostitutes, read Memoirs of a Geisha.
