5 is not very many. Why did you stop? Keep trying until you get a job. Your perseverance will pay off.

You're supposed to follow up. When you leave the application, ask when the decision will be made, so you can call and let them know you'd still like to be considered. If it was an interview, send a thank you card the next day, even if it's for a starter job.

You might still be able to work on the 3-week-old ones, if you call. Sometimes the first hire doesn't work out, or there may be a new job coming up that you could apply for.

I was unemployed for several months after graduating from college. It can be frustrating but you will find something. Don't be scared to take a part-time job that is less favorable if you need the money. This post-holiday season mania is very stressful especially in retail because employers have to cut back. Don't give up, someone will call. I did a lot of volunteer work and helped out with my church and I finally got a call after several months. I applied to at least five to ten jobs a week. The funny part, irony, is that we are now in January and I got hired in October, I'm still getting job offers. Isn't that weird?

I'd say move on and fill out some more apps.. I've noticed in my own personal dealings with job searches that it helps if you commit to filling out 3-4 applications every week, that way you're always hopeful that a call could be around the corner but you're still taking the initiative to keep looking. Plus it's a good habit to get into because it's basically like practice for work. ;-)

Sadly this is the name of the game! Often with jobs, you're not goign to hear back from each of them.

You also don't want to wait for them to come to you. Keep track of every job you've applied to. If after 3 or 4 days you haven't heard, call them up, tell them you've applied, and ask what the status of your application is or if they need anything else from you. Sometimes they will schedule an interview right there. Companies get a ton of apps, so they like it when people come to them. It saves time.

Good luck!

Don't expect a return call. Unfortunately, that is the norm now. Companies are afraid they will be sued for discrimination so they just don't call back unless they are going to offer that person a job. So, go back to them with a second call. Very politely, ask if the position has been filled. If not, remind them that you are very interested in the job and know you would be a responsible employee.

It's always a good idea to place a follow-up phone call. Something like, "Hi, my name is________. I applied for the position of __________ and I wanted to know if that position has already been filled." If it's already been filled, say thank you and move on. If not, ask when will the employer be setting up interviews.

Lastly, please develop a resume and make sure it accurately gives a good description of you and everything you have to offer your potential employer. Enclose your winning resume along with your future applications. The job market is tough, but the smart & strong shall survive! Best of luck to you!

You might as well 'move on' from those applications. When you put out an application, then call back within a week to see what's up. You'll get some idea of whether you're being considered.

good luck

It's a bad time of year to be looking for a job. Everybody slows down after the holidays until about April or May♥
