LCD like was said before is a liquid crystal display. It provides a clear picture at a high resolution without flickering and causing eye strain.

CRT is cathode ray tube. It is very large and bulky. The picture isn't as clear and the screen flickers. They also emit radiation and cause eye strain if you look at them for too long.

LCD is much better for any purpose in my opinion.

I am sure if you got to http://www.howstuffworks.com you will be able to get detailed information about the differences in the two.

Liquid Crystal Display is done by putting a charge to specific spots in the screen to change the color. It is slimmer(so it takes up less room) lighter and cooler, but more expensive. Cathode Ray Tube is done by shooting an electron beam in a vacuum tube to change the image in the front of the tube. The beam sweeps across then down the tube to give us the picture. CRT is the old method.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is the very thin, flat monitors, or a laptop display.
CRT (CathoRay Tube) is the old, big and bulky monitor like an old TV set.
