finding and developing new energy resources,as we have in the Iraqi oil conflict, how far along toward oil dependency do you think we'd be?

We would be oil independent.

Think about it, if Brazil a developing nation became oil independent within ten years of starting their project. Why can't we do the same. They have about 100 million cars we have about 300 million but our economy is much larger we should be able to at least do as well as they did.

If that much was given to certain independent researchers maybe it would have gone a long ways but government think tanks would have nothing to show for it. The war is not an oil conflict, if it was about oil it would have been over a long time ago and Iraq would be a US territory.

if you honestly think that the cost to convert our entire economy and infastructure away from oil is anywhere close to the cost so far in this war you are greatly underestimating the impact oil has on this economy. Granted an effort to curb the dependancy of foriegn oil should be addressed and is being addressed but we are too deep into it to just abandon it.

and anyone that says the oil companies would be against it dont think it though. its not just a resource that would be needed to convert it would also be the distribution and the oil companies already have that in place. 70 % of the cost of oil production is exploration and mining. if they could lower that cost and just use their distribution infastructure they could make if not as much money probably more.

How about if we would have used the half a trillion we spent on just interest on our debt in 2006. How far would that money have gone toward research and development??

Most likely we could be fully energy independent, that scares the hell out of the people who would keep us addicted to oil. They will try to stop that from happening for as long as possible.
