Usually that means that a picture is either unavailable or it's been taken off the website completely..

Usually it means that the picture wasn't found at the place the web page was told to look for it. For example, the web page is told the picture can be found at http://www.joeblow.com/pics/mypic.jpg when the picture is actually at http://www.joeblow.com/mypic.jpg In that case you'll get the little red "X".

Occasionally it's because of network traffic. The website gets too many requests from other visitors and it simply gives up on loading your page so it doesn't show you everything. In that case just reload the page and see if it helps. If it doesn't then you can right click on the little red "X" and go to "Copy Image Location" or "Copy Link Location" or some similarly worded option. Once you've done this, move your mouse pointer to the address bar in your browser, right click and select "Paste" then hit enter and you'll be taken directly to the image itself so that you can see it.

It is the "placeholder" which appears when the browser is unable to download the pictures. Go to the Tools menu at the top of browser window. Go to Tools>Internet Options>and click on the advanced tab. Scroll down the section called multimedia. Everything should be checked EXCEPT "show image download placeholders". This should fix your problem.

Usually when a web page has a "Link" to a picture, like this for example: http://www.mysite.com/myphoto.jpg and the picture isn't really there, the normal response of the browser (like Internet Explorer or Netscape) is to display the red X
(I always assumed it meant X = unknown)

the red cross means that the picture is not downloaded.
it is either you cancelled the navigation or
the computer just stop downloading it.
you can right-click on the picture and press show picture or
you can refresh the page to view the picture.
if you still cannot see it that means it is no longer there.
either deleted or unavailable
