If you notice it's the ignorant part of white america that classifies black music in one genre. In my opinion its like calling all asians Chinese or saying rock and country are one genre just because they are mostly white artists perfomring. Its just ignorance.

Because people feel comfortable when they can label things and fit them into a box. ALSO I think the main reason is because there is so much cross over between the two genres. You have R&B artists singing hooks on Hip-Hop songs and Hip-Hop artists dropping a verse into a R&B song. Alot of hip hop artists apeel to a larger crowd now, where back in the day for the most part the ladies was jammin to the R&B and the fellas was crakin the hip hop.

They prolly just don't listen to them. Anyone that listens to hip hop and r&b can tell the difference. They're totally different!!! Almost opposite. R&b is all about love and relationships, heartache, it can be fun too but it's usually a little smooth slow and kinda blues-ish. And hip hops it's own genre, you can incorporate r&b into hip hop, maybe that's where the confusion comes in. But Hip hop's it's own entity.
Damn the guy under me hit the nail on the head, good answer!! lol.

because they are stupid and some songs are caterized in the same thing. like one song could be considered r&b and then it could be considered hip-hop. i dont see how you could get those 2 mixed up for r&b is slow and hip-hop is hip-hop.

Its hard to say why they confuse the two but it is a common misconception. R&B rythem and blues DUH LOL. But then again it takes me back to one of the best quotes ever said "Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it" Jay-Z.
