It is not recommended because coldwater fish and tropicals have different requirements. The most notable one is that goldfish do not do well at high temps and do not need a heater but guppies should be kept at tropical temps which is around 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. To keep goldfish at high temps or guppies at colder temps is to stress them and shorten their lifespan.
The goldfish over time will get much larger than the guppies and this could eventually cause problems with aggression and even the goldfish eating your guppies. Goldfish are omnivores which means they eat both plant and animal matter and won't hesitate to eat a fish they can easily fit into their mouth. In addtion, goldfish are quite boisterous and their size and activity level will probably intimidate the guppies and cause them to hide a lot.
Also, guppies and goldfish can carry slightly different strains of diseases being that they are from different environmental parameters. If you toss the two together each species has little resistance to the other's germs/parasites.
In short, some people do it but, for long term success keep either tropicals or goldfish in a given tank but not both.

No, not really. Well, you could, and they would probably both survive for a while, but there are many reasons not to mix the two.
First of all, guppies are tropical fish. They thrive in warm water, at about 78F. Goldfish, on the other hand, are coldwater fish requiring a water temperature of about 68F. If you combine the two fish, one or the other or both will be unhappy and unhealthy due to temperature requirements.
Second, goldfish are very messy fish. For their size, they produce copious amounts of waste so your tank may not be as big as you think it is. One fancy goldfish needs about 15 to 20 gallons of water to be healthy. Any less than that and the water will be polluted and dirty in no time. Guppies, of course, are small and require only a few gallons per guppy.
Third, even fancy goldfish can reach 7-8" and would be able to a small adult guppy.
Fourth, goldfish will eat any live plants you put in for the guppies and for the guppy fry.
Both are very hardy fish and, as I say, could probably survive together for a while; but if you want happy, healthy fish, do not mix them.

would not do this mix. Goldfish and guppies are on the extreme opposit sides of the habitat needs. Goldfish are a coldwater fish (water temp between 60-70 degrees F) and guppies are a tropical water fish (74-80 degrees F). Eventhough that is not that huge of a water temp difference it is enough to kill a fish. Guppies are very sensitive to temp and goldfish simply like it colder.
Also, since goldfish get larger than guppies, the goldfish would probably end up eating the guppie.

These are fancy goldfish we're talking about, so I doubt that they would eat the guppies, even the fry, for two reasons. One, the fancies are too small to eat anything bigger than fry, and two, the fancies are too slow to be able to catch even the fry. But, that said, goldfish are not a community fish and cannot be kept with any other type of fish. They have different water quality requirements and they have different water temperature requirements. And, for the record, goldfish, whether comets or fancies, have the following water to fish ratio requirements. 10 gallons of water for each fish up to 3 inches, 15 gallons of water for each fish up to 4 inches and 20 gallons of water for each fish 5 inches or more. So, for instance, the large tank that you have, say 50 gallons, can handle 5 fancy goldfish.

Absolutely not. As others have said, the species cannot mix because one is a cold water variety and the other is warm water. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the excessive amount of waste that goldies produce. Their urine is SUPER toxic to other fish and only goldies can really tolerate to live in that enviornment. Hope that helps!

There are pros and cons on this issue but the general rule of thumb is that goldfish whould have their own space. Goldfish waste will alter the chemical makeup of your aquarium. Often, it is the guppy who will suffer rather than the goldfish. It's very similar to keeping pigeons and canaries in the same cage. It can be done, but is not a healthful environment for the canaries.

its not a perfect tank mix but people mix a lot worse. goldfish will eat most plants -- you can use java fern and java moss -- java moss is great for guppy babies to hang out in. the anubias family of plants is good too.

You can, but not successfully. Guppies are tropicals and require a heated tank and goldfish are not and don't need heaters. Plus they're a dirty fish and your water won't be as clean as it should be - or you'll have to do more cleaning and more water changes.
