i own a repair shop, and usually a bad sensor will cause this,,even a bad air filter can cause one to fail you need to have it scanned to see if it has any bad sensors on it first,,then check all the filters and make sure their clean,,any one of the sensors can make it run richer on gas,,and this will cause it to fail the test,,good luck i hope this help,s.

The most common faults on the Escort were:
1. an air leak anywhere in the exhaust, especially before the oxygen sensor. The exhaust will actually draw air in giving false readings.
2. the oxygen sensor.
3. worn spark plugs.
4. worn out catalyst.

What were the emission figures?

The CPU controls the way the engine runs and one of the first signs that it may be faulty, is exhaust emissions.
However, it could also be that the mixture is too rich, or the timing is out.
You may need to get the cpu checked and possibly replaced.
The CPU is very expensive though, last time I heard it was around £650 but that was for the part and not fitting!

Good Luck with it!

Apart from all what everyone says which could be the prob, it could be as simple as u just doing very short journeys. My 4 year old citroen I had failed the emmisions, took it down the by pass high safe revs and back on tester and it passed, simple as that.
Any decent garage will tell u to give ur car a good run down a long road to clear it out.b4 test is done.

George, Dodge man said it all. Check the reostsat on the headlight switch, this brightens or dims the instrument lights by turning it clockwise then counter clockwise. If it doesnt affect the lights, grab the qwners manual and look for the correct fuse, if the fuse isnt blown you may want to check the push pull switch, the wiring could be bad to these lights or it may be the switch itself. Hope this helps.

Hi there if your in the uk which im guessing you are from the car if you had the actual readings it would be easier for us to narrow down the problem that you have i.e. high Hc reading indicates unburnt fuel which could be a misfire etc

Yes, like roary says, if you can give us the data we should be able to narrow it down for you. Sometimes it's just a general tuning issue which can easily be overcome.

Put all of the smog info #s as far as Co, Nox,Co2,etc. that was over the limit on your question and a technician can tell you most likely what to fix.
