Do I necessarily have to get a Masters degree first? If so how important is it where I get my Masters and which program I choose? Any information will be useful as I am just getting started. Thank-you.

I don't know why so many people here say that you need a master's degree before you can apply to PhD programs. I suspect that none of those people who say it actually have a PhD. I have a PhD and have been accepted to PhD programs without a graduate degree.

Also -- I do not know of any PhD programs that interview students before admitting them. In fact, when I visited one school to talk about the program, the director of graduate studies told me that he didn't want to know my name or undergraduate school because he didn't want it to influence his decisions. Another friend was told by the people at Stanford that they would not talk with him if he visited the campus. MBA programs often interview students -- but not PhD programs.

Most PhD programs -- particularly the good ones -- accept people to their PhD programs with a BS or a BA. The top schools do not even accept people to masters programs (except for terminal degrees like MBAs or a masters in Education) -- and only give them out to students who fail to continue on for a PhD.

You need to decide on an area. Then research programs and apply.

YOU NEED to get a Masters degree first and then apply for admission to the Ph.D program of a university. There are entrance tests and personal interviews for admission to the doctoral programs but practices vary and you can find out from the university you wish to choose. You can get information from the university where you plan to do your masters program, if it offers the facility of pursuing a doctoral degree program.

A PhD in marketing? It will only allow you to be a professor. It won't help you get a corporate marketing job...
