To prevent viruses & worms its best to have an Antivirus program installed on your computer. Firewalls are good too but the anitvirus programs is what will detect and quarantine infected files. A good and free antivirus program is AVG which you can download from the net. Zonelarm is a free and good Firewall as well, which you can also download.

NO, home routers don't usually provide virus protection. At best, they have a hardware firewall.

You best bet for virus and spyware protection is to get a good free antivirus like avg, and some good anti-spyware stuff like Windows Defender, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot Search & Destroy.
