you can see that the carbons are balanced on both the sides(1:1) while oxygen and hydrogen are not. so in order to balance them we add coffecient(2) to O2 and H2 . You dont add 2 to every equation beacuse the overall goal is to balance the equation.Therefore, the balanced equation is
CH4+2(O2) gives CO2+2H2O

Yeah the correct way to balance this iquation is;

CH4 + (2)O2 ====> CO2 + (2)H2O
