My camera fell onto my laptop and I now have horizontal and vertical lines going across it with a spider web type impression on the screen. There is no indentation on the screen. Is there a way to repair it or do I have to have the screen replaced? Dell said it would cost about $600. We have a lot of files that we don't want to lose and the laptop cost about $900. Who can repair it for less than $600?

I replaced mine last spring, it cost me $70. Search ebay for your model of dell, and the word lcd. but first, try this vendor's store, it's where I got mine, it was in perfect working order when it arrived http://stores.ebay.com/synaptic-systems .
this should run you less than $200, if you can't find a cheap one wait a few days, keep checking back, you'll find a deal.
After you get you replacement, you can either pay someone to swap it out or do it yourself as I did. If you do, don't just start removing screws until your laptop is in a million pieces! Go to dell.com , click on support, enter in your service tag number, which is on a label on the bottom side of the laptop, and download the service manual for it. The manual is pretty easy and straightforward to follow. They have syep by step directions with great illustrations how to replace every major component, including the screen.
I was able to find the entire lid assembly on ebay for $70, which made things much easier, I didn't have to remove the screen from the frame, i just replaced the entire lid.

good luck!

Files are safely stored on the hard drive & can easily be retrieved.

$600 repair on a $900 notebook ?
Not worth it.
Sadly, there are no bargain stores offering better deals on this kind of repair.

I suggest you connect the laptop to any external monitor so that you can copy your files onto CD or DVD, & then just buy a new laptop.
