Probably you can't fix it on your own. You need to go to a sleep clinic if you are a loud snorer, the sooner the better! I would guess that you have sleep apnea (and people who aren't overweight CAN have it). If you ignore it, sleep apnea can cause heart damage and even death, so it's nothing to just "put up with."
Sleep apnea is treated with the use of a CPAP machine, which is usually fully paid for by insurance. You can't just go out and buy one, as they have to be adjusted to your individual needs, and too much pressure is as bad as too little. This device cures snoring 100% and will also leave you less tired during the day. I would not take a half-hour nap without using mine! Those strips don't work if you have apnea. Surgery is not usually recommended, as results are not generally as good as CPAP.
Yes, going to a sleep clinic is inconvenient, and you'd really rather not bother, but your life may depend on getting prompt treatment. And your bed partner will be soooo happy when you don't snore anymore!

You need to figure out a few things:
1) if you have apnea, as described above. If so, its a medical risk, and you need the breathing apparatus.
2) If you don't have apnea, broadly speaking, most snorers its one of two things. Either its the nasal passages or, more commonly, its the tongue resting on the back of the throat. Most pharmacies sell some sort of 'breathe right' strips. if its a nasal issue, those will work, give it a shot. Most likely its the tongue though. There are a variety of appliances you can wear to get the tongue forward, most are custom made. I recently tried one called the Aveo TSD which is a one size fits all model. It was about 150 bucks, available through the web, and my wife reports a _major_ improvement. Incidentally, I would _not_ recommend the surgery from what I've read, it has poor results. I'd get checked for apnea, then try the breathing strips, then try the aveo TSD.
Good luck!

Try sleeping on your side- if you find you turn back, put something (eg a ping pong ball) in the collar of your pajamas or t-shirt or whatever it is you sleep in. You might be snoring cause you have a cold, then it should be temporary. Another possible cause is sleep apnea. People with this condition stop breathing for a moment while they sleep and then start snoring. There are medical treatments for this, like a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) mask. If you have a partner, they may be able to notice the pause in breathing while you sleep.

nudge him in the side and make him roll over. That usually works for my hubby. If its very bad you might get him to go to the doctor and be checked for sleep apnea. If he does have sleep apnea they can fit him for a machine that helps him breath better when he's sleeping. The people that I know that have gotten this machine said they sleep much better and have more energy in the mornings. Some insurances will pay for it.
