Using Yahoo or Google. The results appear OK but when I click on a result I end up at a site which offers more choices. (often sex related sites). What have I done to my system for this to happen?. Up until a week ago it all worked fine. Security and virus checks(Norton)show no problems.
It's embarrassing because my wife and I were looking for a crossword answer and when I clicked on a site about ornithology ,up came a sex site.

Your browser has been hijacked. That means that some malicious software has installed itself between you and the internet any site that takes more than a few microseconds will allow the hijacker to act and forward you to the "bad sites".

Try a couple of these programs to see if they can clean up your problem..

Spybot http://spybot.com
Adaware http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
CWshredder http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

But in the mean time you may want to download and install the Firefox browser so you can have a problem free internet connection while you fix your internet explorer infection. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

It's not you or your computer. It's the sneaky way the site administrator gets you diverted to their site. Be very specific when doing a search. I put in stuff like this.

Example: crossword puzzles + Free + answers + etc. + etc.
whatever you are searching for.
That is what a search engine does is DIRECTS you to a site where you can (hopefully) get answers to your questions. I put free in if I'm specifically looking for a free site as some charge and you won't know till you visit them and waste time.

DO NOT DO WHAT Rodercam of Old SUGGESTS!

You are more likely to download spyware or adware which is going to make it 10 times worse.

Indeed find a spyware cleaner, but only from a reliable site, i.e get advice from a friend or local shop.

Search for a spy ware cleaner, download and install it.
I use CC Cleaner it works rather well and removes a lot of the issues you are getting. It is free too! There are also "spy bot" and "adaware".
You may want to run a virus scanner as well. Good luck.

It's nothing to do with you.

Some websites are directories which have paid for results on them.

Try using Wikipedia, or about.com Which have loads of imformative articles on anything you can imagine.
