You have to check your area and ask around who is better reception wise because that varies. In my area Sprint by far as I know about 10 people who switched over from Cingular to get into Sprint or Verizon.
Cingular may have nicer phones but I believe Sprint has the best value in terms of cost and reception, especially if you call in and ask for some "perks." They have great customer service (compared to others, from what i heard). Most consider Verizon to have the best reception but they cost a lot too so...

Pick up the January issue of Consumer Reports magazine, they have a great guide in there by city that shows which cell phone gets the best service for your area, and which drops calls the most.
They also rate the cell phones Cingular and Sprint offer with the plan. They tell you how easy the phone is to use, how well you can hear etc. There is also an article in there about how much you should pay for texting and how to get the best deal. They have easy to read charts. The magazine is only $5.99 well worth it since you are stuck in a phone plan for 2 years usually, could save you some cash and frustration.

Sprint is probably cheaper, but Cingular has better service. Also, a lot of the stuff that Sprint talks about cost around 15 bucks a month.
But, Sprint is the only company that has night talking starting at 7.p.m., and it doesn't end until 7. a.m.

Sprint bites here in Arizona - nothing but lots of dropped calls. I've known many who got out of their contracts with threats of lawsuits it's so bad. I dont' know much about Cingular

Cingular seems to have more area coverage but their bills tend to be huge. Sprint has pretty good rates but not as much coverage as I'd like, and they turn your phone off without warning if you forget to pay your bill.

CINGULAR is by far the best for reception, coverage, options, and plans. I've had it for over 7 years now. Me and my boyfriend have the family talk plan, wonderful idea they came up with.

Depends on how you use it, really. Look at the plans both provide and find out which one suits your lifestyle. I personally rarely call people, but people call me all the time. So I went with Sprint for their Free Incoming plans. But it's all about what fits you best.

Only Verizon...it has the best network coverage, data speed transmissions, customer service, retail stores for service. That's why it has the lowest customer defection/churn rate of the major wireless carriers.
