Go on travelocity.com and compare rates. Rental car companies vary what they change all the time.
I have found that Hertz and Avis are typically the most expensive. I have had some luck with Thrifty and Alamo for cheap rates.
If you can, pay for it in advance on the rental car company's web site. Otherwise, you may be standing in line a long time. Also, check with your auto insurance company to see if you are covered for collisons. The rental car companies will try to sell you their insurance. It's expensive and really adds up over the days. Don't let them sell you anything you don't need. They put a lot of pressure on you.
Good luck.

I travel ALOT and always Priceline my rental cars. I usually start somewhere between $13-15/day. You have to change something to up your bid unless they make you an offer back (happens if you are within $2 of what they will accept.) If you are getting an economy car, you can change it to a compact car and make a new offer. The economy and compact cars are the same thing! I have never paid over $17/day, and I have never found a website with a better price. Good luck!

BookingBuddy is a great resource for finding the best offer on car rentals (and flights, and hotels). I don't have a connection to them, I just book all of my own travel, and have found it a real time-saver and very thorough. You put in your pickup and drop-off city, dates and times, then can select up to 24 sources for it to search. These include actual car rental company web booking sites, Travelocity, Expedia, and sources that have special rates with specific companies.

I'd try if possible to go for Budget...there was a mix up with our reservations last year and they were happy to upgrade our car free of charge, we didn't have to pay extra for insurance either...I thought they provided excellent customer service.

Make an on-line reservation. You should also compare prices.
I usually book Alamo or Budget.
