I've been looking for teen rights, and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I'd like to know what power parents hold over their kids, when is the age that you can have your parents sign for you to move out before 18 {and how does that work?}, and anything else somewhat similar. If you could give me some sites, or just information you know that would be greatly appreciated.

There is the possibility of becoming an emancipated minor, but you would have to prove your ability to support yourself and pay your own bills without the use of state assistance. If you can't pay your own rent, utilities, groceries, and automotive expenses like insurance, repairs, and gasoline, your best bet is to stay with your parents and get an education so you can support yourself in the future.

If you are not being abused or mistreated verbally and made to feel so small for normal stuff I would try to hang on in there until I am grown, if I were you. It's a ***** being grown. It's a ***** needing to pay your bills before you make sure you do all the things that you know if you did not have bills to pay you would do. I know that having that so called freedom is not worth it all the time. If you real do not have to leave I would really stay put. What ever you do try to make it beneficial for you. Good Luck

Laws vary from state to state on this subject. For a comprehensive listing of state laws relating to emancipation of minors see:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/topics/Table_Emancipation.htm

I can provide some general guidelines, however. Generally, a minor is not able to enter into contracts (with certain exceptions), receive government benefits on his or her own, or even consent to medical treatment. A minor is presumed to be incompetent to form the requisite intent necessary to enter into a contract. If you intend to move out on your own, you will need to obtain a court order declaring you emancipated or you will still need your parents to sign for all contracts into which you enter. The procedure in most states is to file a petition for emancipation in the local courthouse. Legal Aid in your locale may be able to assist you with this.

Another option, if you plan to move in with an adult that is not your parent, is to file a petition for guardianship. That person would then take on the responsibilities of your parent as well as certain court implied duties.

If you update your question with specifics I may be able to provide more information.

I beleive it's 16 it's called emacipation. Just remember with all those new adult rights and freedoms comes a host of responsibilities you may not be ready to handle. It's not the free ride many think it is.
