I would be inclined to try methylated spirit. It might take a little bit of shine off the desk, but that could be touched up. Meths is definitely the best solvent for markers and less damaging than nail varnish type removers.

Paint thinner ?? I dont know if that would damage the wood thou test it underneath the dest first

Try hairspray first before you try the other suggestions. It won't damage the surface like other chemicals. Use use plain old hairspray and wipe.

Ordinary household bleach will do the trick. Just let it soak for a while.
