Make sure you do lots of research. The fact that you know you want a mud turtle makes me think you have started doing the research, so good for you! A 30 gallon "long" tank would be good for a mud turtle, or a 40 gallon breeder tank. A Rubbermaid pond sold in most plant nurseries or home improvment stores would be good, too, and probably cheaper than a 40 gallon breeder tank (and easier to clean out in the long run, too).

There are good caresheets at www.turtleforum.com

For ideas on how to set up an aquarium, go to
http://members.tripod.com/~Draybar/draybarturtles.html and http://www.turtlepuddle.org/health/small_tank_filter.html

Just remember that a mud turtle likes more shallow water, and needs something to climb to the surface rather than swim to the surface.

You'll need hiding spots, too, either underwater caves or artificial plants, and a basking area.

Then there's a filter and a heat light at one end.

Some rescues have mud and musk turtles for adoption, but they're not very common in rescue.

Ask the experienced keepers on http://www.reptizone.com in the aquatic turtle section. They'll tell you exactly what you'll need and how to care for it. It's always better to ask reptile related questions on a reptile site rather than yahoo! answers. I've seen some pretty lousy answers! My username on there is DracoLvr although I don't post in the turtle forums. Be sure and look at the turtle caresheets as well! :) Wish you luck

Congratulations on the turtle!

Check out the links below for some general information on keeping turtles.

You probably really want to check out the Turtle Times link. It's got a good forum to ask your questions on, plus lots of information such as care sheets and symptoms of emergency illnesses to keep your turtle happy and healthy.

I have a baby RES I have him in a 29 gallon tank eventually I will need a bigger one as he grows, turtles are fun and very expensive really do research before you get one to make sure it is the right pet for you.

I have a Red Eared Sliding Turtle (they are semi-aquatic). They are the most common pet Turtle other then the Box Turtle (not aquatic). It depends on how much maintainence you want in the Pet. If you get a Red Eared Slider, you'll need at least a 10 Gallon Tank, a good reptile rock for him to bask on, a good filter, special food and also get the information book they sell for them as well so you can learn about the little things they like, like goldfish as a treat every once in awhile and they like to go outside on nice days once in awhile too, I walk mine in our yard in the summer months, he loves it! You can also train them if your not afraid of getting nipped every once in awhile. READ ALOT ABOUT THEM FIRST before you get one though, they are really fun, great pets, but you HAVE to know how to care for them!

How bout this? Instead of asking people what you need for a turtle, do a research on them, you'll have all of your questions answered AND you might change your mind about getting one because they are alot of responsibility. They live for years, they can carry Salmonella, it's not an animal you can really pet but more like watch, you need to get the right moisture, it will need a big environment, one part wet one part dry.

You will need at least a 10 gallon aquarium and you'll need a heat lamp. Make sure he has land, somewhere out of the water so he can sleep. You should at least have about 3/4 full of water. They'll eat fish like those little gold minnow fish. They smell sometimes but not too bad. You need to clean the cage at least every 2 weeks.
