My anti virus has expired, and I'm too broke to pay $40 to renew right now. Is there anything good for free until I can pay for Norton again?

It is a grave misconception that Norton and McAfee. They are the two oldest anti-viruses out there, so they have become popular over the time. Among the not-free ones, many other anti-viruses like Kaspersky, BitDefender, F-Secure, NOD32 etc. beat both Norton and McAfee hands on in virus and trojan detection. And yes, there are anti-viruses among the free ones that are better than these two!! AOL Active Virus Shield (powered by Kaspersky) and AntiVir Classic Personal have better detection rate than Norton and McAfee. In fact, AntiVir has the best heuristics among all known anti-viruses!! And there are the two most popular ones, AVG and Avast, both of which are as effective as Norton and McAfee. Many people use AVG, because it is the lightest, easiest-to-use and has an execellent trojan horse detection, which infects personal computers more than viruses. If you ask me, I will recommend it to you (I use it, too). But if you want comparatively better protection, then grab any one of the others. I have given the links to all, but you MUST use only one anti-virus at a time:
1.AVG (8.5) (Download this à avg75free_432a904.exe): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
2.Avast (8.5): http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
3.AntiVir (8): http://free-av.com/
4.AOL Active Virus Shield (8.5):http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp

There are some other free anti-viruses like Comodo, ClamWin, Dr.Virus etc. but they are crippled in one way or the other. BitDefender also provides a very good anti-virus for free, but without real-time protection.

AVG and Avast are quite good. The best reason to get rid of Norton and McAfee are that both programs are way too bloated and complex and as a result are difficult to use and consume more than their share of system resources. I use AVG a lot and find that it's lightweight, easy to use, and very good at detecting viruses.
Find the free version of AVG at http://free.grisoft.com.
You should be using adware/spyware utility as well. I recommend Microsoft's Windows Defender (free) and/or Spybot Search & Destroy (free).
Good luck.

In my computer, Anti virus Grisoft (AVG) free edition has detected Trojans and virus that Norton couldn't and eliminated them.

Norton
is
not
as
good
as
McAfee.
It is a fact. If you can't pay for anti-virus, just use a local library's computer. Normaly, they will allow you to use a computer for a period of time.
